Can You Run Your Car On Used Cooking Oil (biodiesel)?

Can your car really run on used cooking oil? Actually yes, but in some cases, there is a lot that goes into being able to utilize that used cooking oil for fuel

Everyone’s always looking for a better fuel source for our cars. Gasoline is expensive, not renewable, produces carbon emissions and oil revenues have been known to actually fund terrorism directed at us. One possible answer is a fuel known as biodiesel. Biodiesel is a type of fuel that results when you filter used cooking oil and then run through a process called transesterification. The resulting fuel is a biodiesel that can be used in most diesel engines.

For the most part, you can’t just pour used cooking oil into your car’s gas tank and expect it to run. Standard internal combustion engines just can’t manage with that type of fuel. Diesel engines, on the other hand, can run on biodiesel without any additional modifications. In addition, with a total conversion, a diesel engine can run off used cooking oil without having to process it into biodiesel.

Actually, the first diesel engines used peanut oil as their fuel source.  Diesel engines weren’t converted to petroleum based diesel fuel until the 1920s, when gasoline, which produces today’s diesel fuel as a by-product, and other petroleum products gained prominence in the automotive industry.

Used vegetable cooking oil can be found at a number of locations. Some of the best sources are restaurants, a food processing plant or a commercial or industrial cafeteria. While most of these types of businesses have contracts with waste management companies to dispose of their used oil, they’re usually have to pay to have their used cooking oils hauled away and are open to allowing you to collect used cooking oil for use as biodiesel in your car. The smart bio fuel converter knows that all oils aren’t created equal. Those in the know consider the golden yellow used vegetable oil produced by Chinese restaurants to be the best for converting into biodiesel.

If you’re interested in converting your diesel automobile to run on only used cooking oil, you’ll need to buy a conversion kit. The conversion kit allows you to establish a second fuel storage tank for the used vegetable oil, which must be heated before it can be used. The traditional diesel, or biodiesel, tank must remain. This fuel will be used to start the car and to flush the used vegetable oil out of the fuel line before the car is turned off. Technically, these conversion kits violate federal emissions laws but these laws aren’t usually strictly enforced.

Another method for turning used cooking oil into a usable product for your diesel engine is a product called Diesel Secret Energy. This is our recommended method for  creating your own fuel. While the product that you create here is not technically biodiesel. the system they’ve designed is a tried and true method used in Europe for decades. The system employs simple filters to remove waste particles from waste vegetable oil. The system can only be used with room temperature clearliquid oils such as Soy, Canola, Peanut, etc. It is not designed to work with hydrogenated oils such as shortening. Fortunately, 85-90% of restaurants prefer clear fry oils over the creamy stuff for their frying since the clear oils are much healthier. This means it is easy to locate and restaurants are eager to dispose of it cheaply. You will probably need only two or three small restaurants supplying you oil to become completely independent of gas stations forever.

They show you how to mix the oil with their proprietary blend of ingredients and in a few minutes you have a high quality, clean burning, money saving diesel fuel that only cost you about 46 cents per gallon! While it may or may not increase your gas mileage, diesel Sectet Energy will save you lots of money.

Diesel Secret Energy uses no harsh ingredients such as Methanol or lye, commonly used to make Biodiesel. Instead, their mixture achieves the same goal of making the oil easily usable in any diesel without need for modification of the vehicle. There is no need to replace anything on your vehicle.  No need to spend thousands modifying you vehicle with special heaters or dual tanks. The system is entirely focused on modifying the fuel in a simple way, not the car, truck, tractor, or boat.

Diesel Secret Energy treated cooking oil can easily be mixed with petroleum diesel without any changes to anything.  Effectively, your fuel will be a true alternative fuel that runs just as well, or better, than any petroleum diesel.

We tested Diesel Secret Energy in a Chevrolet pickup, a Mercedes Diesel and a 2007 Peterbilt with a  450 HP Cummins engine. In every case we got as good or slightly better mileage with Diesel Secret Energy.

In the case of the Peterbilt, we found that the cooking oil powered Pete actually pulled a bit better and ran cooler. In all cases, when we combined the use of used cooking oil with an HHO generator, we actually got better accelleration than just straight diesel or diesel treated with Diesel Secret Energy, and about 18% better mileage overall.

We have supplied a link to the Diesel Secret Energy manufacturers site in the Recommended Products section in the lower left hand portion of the page for your convenience.
