If you don’t want to buy a hybrid automobile and can’t wait for electric vehicles to hit the market, you’re probably looking for ways to improve your gas mileage on the car you currently own. Fortunately, there are several ways to improve your gas mileage simply by changing the way that you drive.
- Cut down on how much you drive. Move closer to your job, carpool, use public transportation, ride your bicycle, or walk instead of driving. While this won’t improve your gas mileage, it will cut down on the amount of gas you use.
- Improve your gas mileage by driving less aggressively. Fast starts and hard stops wreak havoc with your gas mileage. Gradually ease onto the gas and brake pedal as conditions allow.
- Drive the speed limit. If you are one of these people who flies down the freeway at 85 mph, you will never improve your gas mileage. Most vehicles get the best gas mileage at around 60 miles per hour. Every five miles per hour you drive over 60 mph reduces your gas mileage significantly.
- Use your cruise control as much as possible. Maintaining a constant speed on the freeway will improve your gas mileage. The only exception to this rule is in the mountains towing a load. If you use cruise control on a steep grade you may decrease your gas mileage rather than increase it.
- Reduce idling. Don’t run your car’s engine while doing things like waiting to pick up the kids from school. An idling car gets 0 miles per gallon and negates any increase in your gas mileage that good driving habits will get you.
- Lose some weight Clean out the unnecessary weight form your car. A hundred extra pounds of weight can reduce your gas mileage by up to 2 percent. Now, 2% might not sound like much. But if you improve your gas mileage 2% ten times, you are starting to really improve your gas mileage.
- Keep your car tuned up. One mechanical problem can seriously reduce your gas mileage, sometimes by up to 40 percent. This is one of the best ways you can improve your gas mileage
- If possible, avoid driving at peak traffic times such as rush hour. As we previously stated, an idling engine gets no miles per gallon.
- Combine your errands. Turn several trips to the grocery store per week into one big trip.
- Plan your trips. Try to run multiple errands. Plan your trip so each stop is close to the next one. This eliminates excessive driving.
- Park in the first spot you find. Don’t waste gas driving around looking for the best space.
- Walk between driving stops. Instead of driving from store to store during errands, park your car in one central location and walk to all of the stores on your list.
- Time traffic lights. Don’t be one of those drivers who guns it at every light that turns green and then gets stopped by every red light. Usually lights are timed so vehicles driving the speed limit will hit the fewest red lights. Cutting down on excessive stops will definitely improve your gas mileage
If you only use a few of these tips, will improve your gas mileage and save you money. All it involves is paying a little more attention to the way you drive. Getting better gas mileage isn’t just good for your wallet; it’s also good for the environment.
