Fuel Additives

This is one of those in the 95% that don’t work column. Most of these fuel additives are in the form of magic pills, sticks or potions that you drop into your gas tank and claim to improve engine performance by removing engine deposits. The thinking being that a cleaner engine will help you improve your gas mileage. While the concept behind these fuel additives is sound and true, they will only be slightly effective. That’s because today’s gasoline contains detergents that aid in preventing engine deposit buildup in the first place. The only way that fuel additives will really affect the buildup of deposits would be in a car equipped with a carburetor that is driven in stop and go traffic conditions.

The only real way to keep deposits from building up in your engine is to burn the gasoline more efficiently. There is only two ways that we have found to accomplish this. That is to convert your car to burn propane gas or turn it into a hydrogen hybrid.

One fuel additive that we do not recommend is acetone. Yes, that’s right I said acetone. Acetone is a common solvent that when used as a fuel additive will actually improve your gas mileage. There are too many negatives to acetone to make it a viable fuel additive though. Acetone has to be handled very carefully. In fact you need to wear rubber gloves when you work with it. It also eats up the paint on your car if you are not careful. It will also dissolve some plastic parts in your fuel system over time.

On the other hand, some legitimate fuel additives are necessary in order to keep your fuel injectors clean. These fuel additives are recommended and even required by some manufacturers in order to maintain your warranty. Some fuel additives can actually improve your gas mileage by between 2% and 5% if you are having a problem with clogged or dirty injectors. If not, these fuel additives will not improve your gas mileage. Krex is one of our favorite fuel system additives and has been for over forty years.
